Slovakia is a Schengen country — your Polish residence permit or Schengen visa most likely already covers your entry.

• Polish residence permit (karta pobytu) or any valid Schengen visa: enter Slovakia without a separate visa — up to 90 days
• EU citizens: no visa needed — ID card or passport is sufficient, no day limit
• Nationals without Schengen visa or EU residence: need a Slovak Schengen visa — apply at the Slovak Embassy in Warsaw; fee €35, processing ~2 weeks
• Important: days spent in Slovakia count toward the 90-day Schengen allowance shared with Poland
• Bonus: a Slovak Schengen visa gives access to all 29 Schengen countries

Slovakia is rewarding in every season — each time of year offers a completely different experience.

• Spring (April–May) — blooming valleys, waterfalls in full flow, no crowds, castles in greenery — ideal for nature and hiking
• Summer (June–August) — best for trekking in the Tatras and canyoning in Slovak Paradise; +22–28°C in the mountains
• Autumn (September–October) — golden Carpathians, wine harvest in the Small Carpathians, fewer tourists
• Winter (December–March) — skiing at Jasná and Štrbské Pleso; Christmas markets in Bratislava and Banská Bystrica

Slovakia offers the High Tatras, medieval castles, UNESCO caves and an underrated capital on the Danube.

• High Tatras — the only alpine range in the Carpathian arc; trekking, lakes Štrbské and Popradské Pleso, summit Rysy (2,499 m)
• Slovak Paradise National Park — wooden ladders through gorges, waterfalls and canyoning without specialist equipment
• Spiš Castle — Central Europe's largest castle complex, UNESCO World Heritage Site; visible from dozens of kilometres away
• Bratislava — compact capital with a castle above the Danube, an old town and a one-hour tram ride to Vienna
• Banská Štiavnica — a medieval mining town inside a volcanic crater, UNESCO World Heritage Site

Both are close to Poland and rewarding destinations — but they offer very different experiences.

• Slovakia — for nature and mountains: the Tatras, caves, canyons and active tourism; fewer tourists and cheaper
• Czechia — for city culture: Prague, Český Krumlov, Moravian castles, beer and cuisine
• Slovakia wins on value, nature diversity and authenticity
• Ideal itinerary: combine both — Prague → Brno → Bratislava → Tatras in 10 days

Slovakia has excellent ski resorts in the Tatras and Low Tatras — significantly cheaper than the Alps.

• Jasná (Low Tatras) — Slovakia's largest and best resort: 33 km of runs, lifts reaching 2,024 m, season December–April
• Štrbské Pleso (High Tatras) — skiing and trekking beside a legendary mountain lake
• Day ski pass at Jasná from €45 — noticeably cheaper than Austria or France

Slovakia is rich in authentic souvenirs — from plum brandy and sheep's cheese to folk crafts and Carpathian honey.

• Slivovica — Slovak plum brandy, stronger than Czech varieties; the best is homemade, from rural markets
• Bryndza — soft brined sheep's cheese, the cornerstone of Slovak cuisine; sold at markets in wooden moulds
• Folk crafts — carved woodwork, embroidered shirts and blue Modra majolica ceramics
• Slovak wines — Small Carpathians region for excellent whites; eastern Slovakia for the famous Tokaj
• Slovak honey — organic, from Carpathian meadows; a fraction of the price found in Western Europe
