Early season escapes: where to go in June before it gets too hot

Among the months for a summer holiday, June has a special status: most European schools haven't yet closed for the summer, so beaches aren't crowded, package prices from Poland are 20–30% lower than in July, and hotel service is noticeably more attentive. At the same time, the Mediterranean is already in full swing, while exotic destinations are offering their first summer discounts. The main trap: don't confuse "summer month" with "warm sea" — at the start of June the water off Bulgaria, Montenegro and parts of Greece hasn't yet reached swimming temperature, whereas Turkey, Cyprus and Tunisia are ready for guests from the very first days.

The classics: warm, beach, sea

These are the destinations people fly to most often from Poland — a short flight (2.5–4 hours), developed infrastructure, a wide choice of hotels. In June it's already proper summer here, and the beaches aren't yet overcrowded.

Turkey

Turkey opens its season earlier than most competitors, and it's precisely the first three weeks of June that offer that rare balance when hotels are running at full capacity but not overcrowded. On the Antalya coast the air temperature in early June stays around 28°C, rising above 32°C in the second half of the month. The sea water on the Mediterranean coast warms to 23–25°C — perfectly comfortable for hours of swimming. The Aegean resorts (Bodrum, Marmaris) are slightly cooler in the water, but milder in terms of climate and humidity. Flight from Warsaw is around 3.5 hours; from Kraków, Katowice, Gdańsk and Wrocław there are charters and scheduled services with LOT, Wizz Air and SunExpress.

Who is it for?

For families with children, All Inclusive fans and those who value a wide choice of hotels. Not recommended for late June: Antalya overheats to +35–38°C and becomes uncomfortable for children and older tourists.

What to do

• Visit ancient Ephesus — in June the air hasn't yet become scorching, and the ruins look particularly impressive.
• Go rafting on the Köprüçay river near Antalya — the water level is still high in June.
• Drive to Pamukkale and its cotton terraces — the excursion takes a full day.
• Try fresh cherries at the local market — in June they are at their very best.

Greece

"The islands before the tourist storm: the turquoise of the Aegean Sea and cafés without queues"

For Greece, June is practically the ideal moment. Crete and Rhodes are already warmed to comfortable water temperatures by the start of the month, while the summer peak crowds haven't yet arrived. The islands are green, accommodation and restaurant prices are lower than in July, and everything is running at full capacity. In the first half of the month the southern islands are most comfortable — Crete, Rhodes, Kos. In the second half they are joined by Corfu, Zakynthos and Santorini. Flight from Warsaw is around 3 hours; from Kraków and Katowice there are direct charters to Chania, Rhodes and Corfu.

Who is it for?

For couples, independent travellers and those who want sea combined with culture. Not recommended for those who need sea water above +25°C — in the first half of June the water on most islands is +22°C.

What to do

• Walk the Samaria Gorge on Crete (16 km) — in June the trail is open and the flow of tourists is not yet at its maximum.
• Watch the sunset in the village of Oia on Santorini — in June you can claim a spot at the parapet without half an hour's wait.
• Visit the Acropolis of Lindos on Rhodes before 9 am — almost no queue.
• Try Cretan olive oil straight from an olive press in the area around Chania.

Cyprus

"The warmest sea in the Mediterranean in June, a dry climate and beaches without overcrowding"

Cyprus in June is one of those rare cases when the weather delivers almost a resort maximum from the very first days: air temperature +28–30°C, humidity low, virtually no rain, and the sea around the island is already +25–26°C. This is one of the few destinations from Poland where you can swim in genuinely warm water as early as 1 June. The golden sandy beaches of Ayia Napa and Protaras are ideal for families with children; Limassol and Paphos suit those who want to combine the sea with city walks. Flight from Warsaw is around 3.5 hours; from Kraków there are direct Ryanair flights to Paphos.

Who is it for?

For families with children, couples and those looking for a European-style holiday with cosy tavernas. Not recommended for those who like large hotels with round-the-clock entertainment — Cyprus is dominated by smaller apartment complexes.

What to do

• Hire a buggy and explore the Akamas Peninsula — in June there is not yet any exhausting heat and the mountain trails are fully walkable.
• Have lunch in the village of Lefkara — famous lace and fried halloumi right by the entrance.
• Swim at Cape Greco — clear water in the caves and the complete feeling of a desert island.
• Visit the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos early in the morning — stone burial chambers from the 3rd–2nd century BC before the sun has heated the rocks.

Spain

"Two formats in one trip: cultural programme in Barcelona or beach holiday on the Costa Blanca — choose according to your mood"

In early June the Spanish Mediterranean coast is only just entering its season: air temperature +23–25°C, plenty of sun, manageable tourist numbers. On the Costa Brava and Costa Daurada the water has only warmed to +19–20°C — a little cool for active swimming, but the beaches are scenic and hotels have heated pools. In the south of the country (Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol) and on Tenerife the picture is different: water is already +22–24°C and the sun is summer-generous. The Canary Islands operate as a resort year-round. Flight from Warsaw is 3–3.5 hours; direct Ryanair and Wizz Air flights from Gdańsk, Wrocław and Poznań to Alicante, Malaga, Palma and Tenerife.

Who is it for?

For those who want to combine architecture, gastronomy and sea air, and for families looking for well-developed infrastructure. Not recommended for Barcelona and the Costa Brava if you want to swim — in early June the water there is barely +19°C.

What to do

• Go up the Sagrada Família in Barcelona early in the morning — in June the queue at 8:00 takes 15 minutes, not 2 hours.
• Drive the coves of the Costa Brava in a hire car — Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar are almost empty in June.
• Take a boat along the cliffs of Majorca to the beach at Sa Calobra — getting there overland is extremely difficult.
• Visit Park Güell without the crowd — in June morning tickets are available a week before your visit.

Budget beach holidays

Four destinations where a beach holiday from Poland in June is cheapest. The infrastructure is more modest than Turkey's, but the beaches, sun and sea are the same. Particularly relevant for families with children and those planning a trip for two on a limited budget.

Bulgaria

"Untrodden beaches, fresh cherries and the Black Sea — which by the end of June is already quite warm"

Bulgaria in June is a good choice for those who want an affordable family holiday without complicated flights. In the first half of the month the air warms to +24–26°C and the sea to just +19–21°C: fine for the hardened, while others should choose hotels with pools. After 20 June the Black Sea heats up to +22–23°C and the season gathers pace. A pleasant bonus: June is the peak cherry, apricot and strawberry season in Bulgaria — at every market a bucket of prime fruit for next to nothing. Flight from Warsaw is around 2.5 hours; from Kraków and Katowice there are direct charters to Varna.

Who is it for?

For families with children for whom price is important, and for those who enjoy a leisurely holiday with excursions to historic towns. Not recommended for those expecting Turkish standards of hotel service and entertainment.

What to do

• Walk around the old town of Nessebar — medieval churches 30 metres from the Black Sea.
• Buy a bucket of cherries from farmers by the roadside — in June they are sweeter and cheaper here than anywhere else in the region.
• Hire a boat in Sozopol and reach the island of St Ivan — an uninhabited island with a lighthouse.
• Visit the Rila Monastery — Bulgaria's most beautiful monastic complex in the mountains, 2 hours from the coast.

Tunisia

"The cheapest All Inclusive from Poland in June — and a trip to the Sahara thrown in"

Tunisia remains one of the most underrated summer destinations from Poland. In June the weather is stable: air temperature +28–30°C, the sea at the shore warms to +23–25°C, and the resort area of Hammamet-Yasmine has waterparks and well-developed beach infrastructure. Essentially important: don't skimp on hotel category — Tunisian 4–5 star All Inclusive properties differ substantially in quality from cheaper options. Flight from Warsaw and Kraków is around 3 hours; seasonal charters from Katowice to Monastir.

Who is it for?

For families on a limited budget, those who enjoy combining beach with excursions, and those interested in thalassotherapy — Tunisia is highly developed in this area. Not recommended for those used to Turkish standards of hotel infrastructure and entertainment.

What to do

• Visit Sidi Bou Saïd — the white-and-blue artists' town drowning in bougainvillaea in June.
• See the ruins of Carthage — in June there are fewer tour coaches than at the height of the season.
• Take a two-day Sahara tour — Star Wars locations and a sunset on the Chott el-Djerid salt lake.
• Book a thalassotherapy course — in June discounts of up to 30% on treatments are common.

Albania

"The untouched Ionian coast, prices lower than Montenegro's and views you won't find on postcards"

Albania is the most underrated beach destination in the Balkans. In June the air temperature is around +27–28°C, and the Ionian Sea off Saranda and Ksamil warms to +23–24°C — clear, calm water among rocks and pine forest. Accommodation and food prices are noticeably lower than in neighbouring Montenegro and Croatia. Infrastructure is developing fast, but it's still far from Turkish standards — there are no large All Inclusive hotels, but there are cosy apartment complexes right by the sea. There are few direct flights from Poland to Tirana; most people fly via Rome, Vienna or Istanbul, or take charters to Montenegro and then a bus.

Who is it for?

For independent travellers, couples and those looking for unspoilt nature and affordable prices without compromising on coastal beauty. Not recommended for those who want the familiar All Inclusive format — it simply doesn't exist here.

What to do

• Drive to Ksamil and swim off the three small islets — clear water and white sand like the Caribbean, but without the tour coaches.
• Visit Gjirokastër — an open-air museum city, a UNESCO site in the mountains.
• Take a boat from Saranda to the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) — a karst spring with improbably blue water.
• Walk the Llogara Canyon — one of the deepest canyons in Europe, not yet dried out in June.

Montenegro

"Mountains meet the sea: the Adriatic without crowds, medieval towns and one of the most beautiful bays in Europe"

Montenegro is one of the few corners of Europe where mountain scenery literally overhangs the sea. In the first half of June the weather is unstable: there are brief storms and the water has only warmed to +20–22°C. After 15 June the climate settles, air temperature reaches +26–28°C and the sea becomes comfortable. The Adriatic coast resorts offer mainly pebble beaches, but prices are noticeably lower than in neighbouring Croatia. Flight from Warsaw to Tivat is around 2.5 hours (Ryanair).

Who is it for?

For those who want to combine the sea with mountain excursions and value unspoilt nature at modest prices. Not recommended for those who need sandy beaches and large hotel complexes — most Montenegrin beaches are pebble.

What to do

• Take a boat and sail through the Bay of Kotor — one of the most beautiful fjords of the Mediterranean.
• Climb the city walls of Kotor (1,355 steps) and see the entire bowl of the bay from above.
• Drive to Durmitor — mountain freshness and Black Lake 2 hours from the coast.
• Spend an evening at a fish restaurant in Herceg Novi with the day's catch and local wine.

Sea + culture

For those for whom just a beach isn't enough. In these destinations the sea is only part of the programme: nearby are historic cities, national cuisine, architecture and nature parks. June is particularly good here — no summer heat, fewer tourists, and everything is already open.

Italy

"Free sun loungers in Sicily, flowering lemon groves of the Amalfi and Rome without the July crush"

In June Italy reaches the peak of its charm: exhausting summer heat hasn't yet arrived, but the Mediterranean coast is already running at full capacity. Rome and Florence at +24–26°C are perfect for walking, Sicily is enjoying its first truly warm swims, and the Amalfi Coast is open in all its splendour — without the crowds that will appear in July. Flight from Warsaw to Rome is around 2.5 hours (LOT, Ryanair, Wizz Air); to Palermo or Catania around 3 hours.

• Take a boat to the beach at Fiordo di Furore (Amalfi) — a grotto in the rock, turquoise water, no tourist traffic jams in June yet.
• Drive to the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento in Sicily — in June the area is surrounded by wild poppies.
• Visit the Vatican Museums at 8 am on a weekday — in June you walk in almost without queuing.
• Buy mozzarella di bufala straight from a farm near Naples and eat it with local tomatoes.

Croatia

"Dubrovnik and the islands before the tourist peak: the best water on the Adriatic and medieval cities almost without crowds"

Croatia in June is one of the most balanced options for those who want to combine sea with historic cities in European comfort. The Adriatic warms to +22–24°C, weather is stable, prices haven't yet reached their summer peak. Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar at the start of the month receive tourists but without July's queues at the sights. The islands of Hvar, Brač and Korčula are accessible by ferries from the mainland. Flight from Warsaw to Dubrovnik or Split is around 2 hours (Ryanair, Wizz Air, LOT); direct flights from Wrocław and Poznań.

Who is it for?

For couples, fans of active holidays (kayaking, diving) and those who value European service standards. Not recommended for those looking for budget All Inclusive — Croatia is one of the more expensive countries in the region.

What to do

• Walk the city walls of Dubrovnik early in the morning — 2 km above the Adriatic with almost no one around.
• Take a kayak from Dubrovnik to the island of Lokrum — 15 minutes paddling, then a botanical garden and wild peacocks.
• Hire a sailing yacht from Hvar for the day — the Pakleni Islands are better seen from the water.
• Visit Krka National Park — waterfalls surrounded by Mediterranean greenery; in June you can still swim.

Portugal

"The Atlantic coast at its best: golden cliffs of the Algarve, fresh seafood and gentle sun without exhausting heat"

Portugal in June is the optimal time to visit: hot August is still ahead, far fewer tourists, and in the south of the country — in the Algarve — the weather is consistently sunny. The Atlantic remains cooler than the Mediterranean (+18–20°C in the north, up to +22°C in the south), but the beaches with golden limestone and rock arches are among the most beautiful in Europe. In Lisbon and Porto in June the temperature is ideal for walking — +22–24°C without humidity. Flight from Warsaw to Lisbon is around 3.5 hours; to Faro (Algarve) around 3.5 hours (Ryanair, Wizz Air); direct flights from Gdańsk and Wrocław.

Who is it for?

For couples, gastronomy enthusiasts and those who want scenic beaches without crowds and heat. Not recommended for those who want to swim in warm water — the Atlantic in Portugal is cool even in summer.

What to do

• Hire a kayak and paddle under the rock arches of Ponta da Piedade (Lagos) — the most photogenic cliffs in Europe.
• Drive to Sintra from Lisbon — palaces on hills surrounded by tropical forest, without crowds in June.
• Try pastel de nata at the original bakery Pastéis de Belém in Lisbon.
• Visit Serradinho and Praia da Marinha beach in the Algarve — the most scenic view of the Atlantic.

Malta

Malta in June is one of the most underrated choices for a trip from Poland: a 2.5-hour flight, no visa, the euro and English spoken everywhere. Air temperature +24–26°C — ideal for walks and sightseeing. Sea +22–23°C, diving with visibility up to 30 metres. Three islands — Malta, Gozo and Comino with the Blue Lagoon — fit into an area smaller than Warsaw, yet contain 7,000 years of history, including megalithic temples older than Stonehenge. Flight from Warsaw is around 2.5 hours (Ryanair).

Who is it for?

For couples, first-time independent travellers and divers. Not recommended for those who want soft white sand — Malta's beaches are mostly rocky.

What to do

• Wander around Valletta — the EU's smallest capital and a UNESCO site — in June the city is in bloom and without crowds.
• Take the ferry to Gozo — salt pans, the citadel in Rabat, a relaxed pace of life free from tourist bustle.
• Visit the underground temple of Ħaġar Qim — one of the oldest megalithic monuments on the planet.
• Have dinner in Marsaxlokk — a fishing village with a Sunday seafood market.

Exotic: long-haul destinations

Three destinations for those who want something fundamentally different. The long flight is offset by prices below the peak season, a warm ocean and experiences you simply cannot get in the Mediterranean.

Zanzibar (Tanzania)

"White coral sand, the turquoise Indian Ocean and spices in the air — and in June no rainy season"

Zanzibar in June is the best time to visit: the long rainy season (masika) is ending, the islands are drying out and the Indian Ocean is calming down after the storms. Water +26–27°C, reefs open for snorkelling and diving, and the crowds of European and Russian tourists that fill the islands in December–January have not yet arrived. The archipelago consists of several islands: Unguja (Zanzibar proper), Pemba and Mafia — each with its own character and reefs. Flight from Warsaw is around 10–11 hours with a connection in Doha, Dubai or Addis Ababa.

Who is it for?

For couples, newlyweds and those who want to combine a beach holiday with immersion in Swahili culture. Not recommended for those who are nervous about long flights and an unfamiliar climate.

What to do

• Swim with turtles near the village of Nungwi — in June the water is calm and visibility excellent.
• Take a spice plantation tour — cinnamon, vanilla and cardamom in the living.
• Stroll through Stone Town in the evening — a labyrinth of Arab streets, the smell of spices and street food.
• Take a sunset dhow (traditional boat) from Nungwi — one of the finest sunsets in the Indian Ocean.

Kenya

"The start of the Great Migration and Indian Ocean beaches: safari and white sand in one trip"

Kenya in June opens one of the most impressive natural spectacles on the planet: the Great Migration begins — hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras move from the Serengeti towards the Masai Mara. In June the savanna grass is green after the rains, rivers are full and there are more animals on the reserve's plains than during the dry season. Alongside this, the Indian Ocean coast is operating — Diani Beach and Malindi with white sand and coral reefs. Flight from Warsaw with a connection is around 9–10 hours.

Who is it for?

For wildlife enthusiasts, photographers and those who have long dreamed of seeing the Big Five. An excellent option for an unusual honeymoon. Not recommended for those not prepared for the changeable savanna climate and long flights.

What to do

• Set out on a morning game drive at 6 am — at this hour predators are most active and well lit for photos.
• Go up in a hot air balloon over the Masai Mara — a bird's eye view of the savanna.
• Snorkel on the Kisite-Mpunguti reef near Diani Beach — one of the best coral reefs in East Africa.
• Visit Nairobi National Park — the world's only wildlife reserve within the boundaries of a city of over a million people.

Bali (Indonesia)

"Dry season on the island of the gods: surfing, rice terraces and not a drop of rain"

For Bali, June is one of the best months of the year: the start of the dry season, low humidity, ideal conditions for surfing on the west coast and hiking in the island's mountainous interior. Ocean water +27–28°C, virtually no rain — a fundamental difference from the wet season running from October to March. Significantly fewer tourists in June than in July–August when Europeans arrive on holiday. Flight from Warsaw is around 15–16 hours with a connection in Doha, Dubai or Kuala Lumpur.

Who is it for?

For lovers of exotic destinations with rich nature and culture, surfers and couples who want to combine the beach with spiritual practices and yoga. Not recommended for those who are nervous about long flights or prefer familiar European service standards.

What to do

• Climb Mount Batur at sunrise — set off at 4 am, 2 hours climbing, view of the crater lake in the first rays of the sun.
• Watch the kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple at sunset — fire, the sea below, a chorus of 150 men.
• Hire a scooter and drive around the Tegallalang rice terraces — in June the road is dry and not washed out.
• Book a Balinese spa massage — in June prices are 15–20% lower than in August.

❌ Where not to go in June

Not all popular destinations are equally good in June. Some of them are going through the rainy season or extreme heat at this time, which reduces the pleasure of a holiday to a minimum.

Thailand (Phuket, Krabi)

Phuket and Krabi in June are hit by the south-west monsoon: heavy rain, high waves, closed beaches and red flags. Koh Samui (east coast) is still relatively dry in June, but the monsoon reaches it by the end of the month. Thailand is best planned for November–April.

Vietnam (centre and south)

Hội An, Nha Trang and the south of the country are in the full rainy season in June with tropical downpours and high humidity. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are hot and rainy at this time. Vietnam is best visited from October to March.

Sri Lanka (west and south)

The south-west monsoon makes June extremely rainy on the western and southern coast — precisely where the most popular resorts are: Unawatuna, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa. The eastern coast (Trincomalee) opens in June, but the infrastructure there is more modest.

Egypt (Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh)

In June the air temperature reaches +38–42°C, and lengthy walks or excursions to Luxor or Cairo become an ordeal. The sea is warm (+26°C), but the holiday reduces to a "room to pool and back" format. Egypt is an excellent choice for October–April, but not for June.

UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi)

The Emirates are entering the hottest period of the year: air temperatures reach +40–45°C, and coastal humidity makes being outdoors uncomfortable after just 10–15 minutes. Beach holidays are effectively impossible. The UAE is an excellent choice for October–April.

First or second half of June: the difference in weather and prices

This is an important question if warm sea is your priority. At most Mediterranean resorts the difference between 1 and 25 June is 2–4 degrees in water temperature. Cyprus, Tunisia and southern Turkey (Alanya, Side) are comfortable from the very first days. The Greek islands (apart from Crete and Rhodes), Montenegro and Bulgaria only reach swimming temperature in the second half of the month.

On prices: the first half of June is cheaper by around 10–15%. In the second half prices start to rise as Polish and other European school holidays approach. If you're travelling with children and have no attachment to the school calendar — go in early June.

Choose your June

The main advantage of June is choice: in this month budget Tunisia and honeymoon Zanzibar, family Cyprus and cultural Croatia are all available simultaneously. Prices are still spring-like, beaches are not overcrowded and everything is open and working.

If warm sea from day one is essential — Turkey, Cyprus or Tunisia. If you want beauty and culture — Croatia, Italy or Portugal. If you have long dreamed of the exotic — Zanzibar or Kenya will give you more in June and fewer crowds than in December.
