The same hotel can cost twice as much in December, and what moves the figure is the departure date rather than the hotel. Rates stay at off-season level until 18–20 December, then reach the highest point of the year between 20 December and 3 January. Good hotels over the holidays sell out two to four months ahead, so the date on your ticket shapes the budget more than the country you pick.

In December the date moves the price more than the country does
December holds two separate travel seasons. The first runs to the 18th or 20th: hotels in Egypt, on the Canaries and in the Emirates sit half empty, rates hold at November level, and this is the cheapest warm winter week of the season. The second starts on 20 December, when occupancy reaches capacity, prices add 50 to 100 per cent and last-minute deals stop appearing. After 3 January the figures drop back.
The increase lands unevenly. It bites hardest in the Maldives, Dubai and the Dominican Republic, where hotels add a compulsory New Year's Eve dinner and a minimum stay. Egypt takes it most gently, with a huge room stock and hard competition between operators: the rise there sits closer to 30 per cent than 100.

The rule that follows is straightforward. If your dates are flexible, settle them before comparing countries: shifting the trip a week away from the holidays saves more than swapping the Emirates for Egypt. If the dates are fixed, budget for holiday rates and book early — in that window the question is no longer the price but whether anything decent is left.
Egypt: the cheapest warm sea of any December option
The Red Sea holds +23–24°C in December, with air at +23–25°C. You can swim without a second thought, and the reefs off Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Sharm el-Sheikh work all year round, so winter puts no limit on snorkelling or diving. Rain is rare. The evenings are the cool part: it drops to +15–17°C after sunset, the wind often picks up along the shore, and a fleece earns its place from day one.
Before booking, check the one thing photographs never show — whether the hotel heats its pool. In December an unheated pool can be colder than the sea, and with children along that changes half of every day.

Not worth it if you are hoping for summer heat and warm evenings on the terrace. December here means a pleasant day and a cold night, and wind on the Red Sea can spoil a beach day under full sun.
The Canaries: dependable sun, a cool ocean
The Canaries keep +22–24°C by day and +20–22°C in the ocean. Nowhere closer to Poland offers sun this reliable, and the trip needs no connection and no new time zone. Daylight is short, around ten and a half hours, but the weather rarely lets you down: the south of the islands counts only a handful of wet days a month.
The choice that matters is the side of the island, not the island itself. Northern Tenerife around Puerto de la Cruz sits under trade-wind cloud and spends much of a December day grey, while Costa Adeje in the south has clear sky at the same hour. Gran Canaria splits the same way: Las Palmas north, Maspalomas south. Pick the coast first, the star rating second.

Travellers who want dependable sun with no formalities and no jet lag: older parents, families with toddlers, and anyone pairing the beach with hill walking, which suits December temperatures better than summer ones. Not worth it when swimming is the main point of the holiday. The Atlantic here runs +20–22°C, noticeably colder than the air, the surf can be heavy, and several beaches are black sand, unlike the brochure picture.
The UAE: the best weather of the month and the largest bill
December is the most comfortable time of year in the Emirates: +26–27°C by day, dry, free of the summer humidity, with the Gulf at +24–25°C. Evenings settle at +18–20°C, exactly what dinner outdoors or a run into the dunes calls for. The destination suits people for whom a beach alone is not enough — water parks, towers, shopping and desert trips all run at full strength in winter.
Two details are worth knowing. The Dubai Shopping Festival opens in December and fills hotels further, so prices in the second half of the month rise for two reasons at once. And the emirates do not all face the same water: Fujairah sits on the Indian Ocean, where the sea runs a degree or two warmer than in Dubai. Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman are quieter and cheaper.

Travellers who need the weather guaranteed and a programme beyond the beach: shopping, attractions for children, the desert, and fireworks to finish the year. Not worth it if you came looking for savings or for quiet. This is the priciest of the nearby destinations, and over the New Year dates hotels attach a compulsory dinner and a minimum stay. Where cost decides, the same week in Egypt runs at roughly half the price.
The Indian Ocean: the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Zanzibar at their driest
Across the Indian Ocean, December falls in the middle of the dry season and brings the best weather of the year. The Maldives run +30°C by day, the ocean sits at +28°C, flat and clearer than in any other month. Prices are at their annual maximum too. Sri Lanka works its west and south coasts at this time: Bentota, Unawatuna and Mirissa see +30–31°C, water at +27–28°C and no rain. Zanzibar catches a short dry window before the wet season: +31°C, ocean +28–29°C.
Each island comes with a condition you need in advance. Sri Lanka is dry only along the western and southern shores; the east, around Trincomalee and Pasikuda, has its rainy season at the same time. On Zanzibar's east coast the tide empties the lagoon for several hours a day and swimming follows the tide table; Nungwi and Kendwa in the north are free of that. The Maldives add one formality — an electronic traveller declaration submitted at least 96 hours before departure.

Who is it for
The Maldives suit divers and couples travelling for quiet water and nothing else. Sri Lanka suits anyone adding tea country, elephants and ancient cities to the beach. Zanzibar suits those who want the tropics below Maldivian prices. Not worth it on seven nights to any of the three — two of those days go to the journey. Zanzibar also falls away if you would rather not plan swims around a tide table, and the Maldives if the holiday needs more than a reef and a beach.
Thailand: dry on the Andaman side, wet on Koh Samui
December is the height of the dry season along the Andaman coast. Phuket, Krabi and Khao Lak hold +31–32°C by day, a sea at +28–29°C, sun for most of the day and calm water. Thailand also works out well on cost for a long-haul trip: hotels, food and local transport come cheaper than in the Maldives or the Caribbean, so part of the airfare comes back on the ground.
The name of the country is not enough to choose by: the two coasts sit in different seasons through December. On Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao the rains fade only towards the end of the month, which leaves Phuket and Krabi for anyone flying before the holidays. One more item: the digital arrival card, TDAC, is completed online for every passenger, children included.

Trips of a fortnight or longer, travellers who want a beach, a food scene and sightseeing in one holiday, and anyone after the tropics at a sensible price. Not worth it on a single week, or if connections and a six-hour time shift wear you down — the first two days usually go on recovering. If Koh Samui is the plan, aim for the second half of the month.
The Caribbean: the first month after hurricane season
The Atlantic hurricane season closes officially on 30 November, which makes December the first month with predictable Caribbean weather. The Dominican Republic, Punta Cana above all, runs +29°C by day with an ocean at +27–28°C. Mexico's Riviera Maya around Cancún is a degree cooler but adds the Yucatán: Mayan cities and cenotes.
The practical difference lies in the journey. Direct charters reach Punta Cana in roughly 10–11 hours each way, while Cancún usually means a connection and 13–14 hours. Paperwork is light: the Dominican tourist card comes with the airfare, though the E-Ticket form is filled in separately, before arrival and before the return flight.

Holidays of ten days and upwards, followers of Caribbean-style all inclusive, and anyone who wants the forecast settled rather than watched. Mexico also suits people who cannot sit still on a lounger for a week. Not worth it across seven nights or on a tight budget: the flying alone eats two days of leave, and December prices here rank among the year's highest. For a short break, Egypt or Dubai are nearer and cheaper.
The Mediterranean in winter: cities, thermal spas and ruins instead of beaches
There is no beach season on the Mediterranean in December. Cyprus has air at +17–19°C and water at +19–20°C; Antalya sits at +16–18°C with a sea of +18–19°C, and multi-day rain comes with it. Other things do work: ruins without heat or queues, thermal springs and spa hotels, at prices summer never offers — a week for two starts around PLN 2,000.
The trick is knowing what actually operates. Beach hotels in Kemer, Side and Belek mostly close for the winter, while city hotels in Antalya and the thermal resorts inland around Pamukkale stay open. On Cyprus the winter belongs to Paphos, Limassol and Larnaca, and much of Ayia Napa and Protaras shuts for the season.

Who is it for
Travellers going for archaeology at a comfortable temperature, for spa and thermal stays, or for a short flight and a small bill. Not worth it if swimming and sunbathing are on the list: at +18–20°C in the water the beach is out, and the closed seafront hotels leave whole resorts without restaurants or entertainment.
What to do
- Book a city hotel in Antalya, Paphos or Limassol rather than a resort outside town.
- Confirm before paying that the indoor pool and spa run in December — many properties switch them off.
- Pack a raincoat: December is the wettest month of the year in both Cyprus and Turkey.
- For a thermal stay, ask whether the hotel has its own spring or drives guests ten kilometres to one.
Entry rules: what the passport decides and what a residence permit does not
The principle is simple: inside the Schengen area your Polish residence status carries weight, outside it it does not. The Canaries belong to Spain, so the shared Schengen rules apply. Every other destination here lies beyond the Schengen border, where the nationality in your passport decides and a Polish residence card grants no right of entry.
Two changes from 2026 are worth knowing. The EES has been fully live at the external Schengen borders since 10 April 2026: digital registration with fingerprints and a facial image has replaced the passport stamp, so a first crossing takes longer. It does not register holders of residence permits, which covers most non-EU residents of Poland. ETIAS has slipped — the fourth-quarter 2026 target came off the official site in July, and a revised timetable is promised for the autumn.
Egypt: a visa is required of everyone; the e-visa costs USD 25 and covers 30 days. Travellers staying only in South Sinai (Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba, Taba) for up to 15 days can take the free stamp, but it allows no travel beyond that zone and does not apply in Hurghada or Marsa Alam.
The UAE: Polish and most EU passports enter without a visa or receive a free one on arrival; other nationalities follow different terms, so check yours before you pay for the trip.
The Maldives: a free 30-day visa on arrival for almost every passport, plus the electronic traveller declaration no later than 96 hours before departure.
Sri Lanka: an ETA is compulsory. Since 25 May 2026 it has been free of charge for nationals of forty countries, Poland among them, and covers 30 days.
Thailand: terms depend on the passport, and the TDAC arrival card applies to everyone. In May 2026 the government approved cutting visa-free stays from 60 days to 30, but the measure has not yet taken effect.
The Dominican Republic and Mexico: no visa for Polish and EU citizens; other nationalities should check in advance. The Dominican tourist card comes with the airfare, and the E-Ticket form is mandatory.
Zanzibar: a USD 50 visa plus government insurance at USD 44 per person, bought only through the official portal; your own policy does not count in its place.
Cyprus: still outside the Schengen area, although the European Commission issued a positive readiness assessment in August 2026. Cyprus does admit holders of a valid residence permit from a Schengen state, a Polish residence card included, for stays of up to 90 days.
Check passport validity separately: Egypt, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and the UAE want at least six months left after your return date. Rules shift during the season, so confirm them shortly before departure.
Pre-booking checklist:
- Fix the departure date before the country: 15 and 27 December differ by 50–100% in price.
- Book Christmas and New Year two to four months out.
- Check whether the hotel heats its pool — in Egypt and on the Canaries that decides half of every day.
- For Sri Lanka, Zanzibar and Thailand pick the right side of the island or coast; neighbouring shores run opposite weather.
- Allow for border fees: USD 25 in Egypt, USD 94 per person in Zanzibar with the insurance.
- Read the rules against the nationality in your passport, not your residence card — outside Schengen it opens no borders.
Common mistakes:
- Leaving holiday dates until the last minute. New Year hotels sell out months ahead, and what remains costs the most.
- Expecting summer weather from Egypt and the Canaries. Days are warm, but evenings drop to +15–17°C and the Atlantic at +20–22°C is not for everyone.
- Going to the Mediterranean for the beach. Water at +18–20°C, rain and shuttered seafront hotels make this a destination for cities and spas.
- Choosing an island without choosing its side. Northern Tenerife, eastern Sri Lanka and eastern Zanzibar run different December weather from the opposite shores.
- Counting on the Sinai stamp when flying to Hurghada. It applies only in South Sinai and rules out both Cairo and Luxor.
- Skipping the compulsory Zanzibar insurance. Without the paid government policy you will not be let onto the island, and private cover is not accepted instead.

One week and a limited budget point to Egypt: warm sea, reefs and the lowest price on the list. No visa and no time difference point to the Canaries, provided swimming is not the priority. The best weather of the month, a city and New Year's Eve fireworks point to the UAE, at a higher cost. A fortnight and water above +27°C open up the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Zanzibar, Thailand and the Caribbean, depending on whether you value diving, sightseeing or white sand. Take Cyprus and Turkey for ruins, thermal spas and city days.
One practical tip:
Before hunting for a cheaper country, price the same hotel on two dates, 12 and 27 December. In most offers the change of date cuts the bill further than moving from the Emirates to Egypt, and the weather is all but identical.
