Hurghada – one of Egypt's most popular resorts – stretches along the Red Sea for 40 km. Add the nearest resort areas – El Gouna to the north and Safaga to the south – and the coastline comes to nearly 100 km. And each of the ten districts along that stretch is its own story: type of beach, hotel standards, what's available beyond the gates, and how much wind hits in winter.
We move from north to south. Hurghada Airport (HRG) sits in the middle of this stretch – between El Ahia and the Sakalla district – and we give the distance to it for each area individually.

Flights from Poland: direct charter flights to Hurghada (HRG) operate from Warsaw, Katowice, Kraków and Gdańsk. Flight time is approximately 5 hours. Transfer to the hotel depends on the district: from 10 minutes (El Mamsha) to 1.5 hours (Safaga).
El Gouna
«The Egyptian Venice» – a self-contained resort for those who care about atmosphere»
El Gouna stands apart from every other resort on the Egyptian coast. The town was built from scratch in the 1990s at the behest of Egyptian billionaire Samih Sawiris – with world-class architects and a strong focus on environmental sustainability. Today it's one of the greenest and most eco-conscious resorts in Egypt.
The resort is threaded through with a network of canals navigated by boats and launches – hence the nickname «Egyptian Venice». There are no tower blocks here: most hotels are two- or three-storey villa complexes set on separate islets. The atmosphere is calm and upscale – no loud nightclubs.
An important caveat about the beach: only a handful of El Gouna hotels have direct access to the open sea. Most properties sit on lagoons or canals – getting to the beach means a boat transfer (price varies by hotel). The sea is shallow here: sandy shallows extend 600 metres out from shore. Swimming in the canals is possible, but only at certain hotels and in specifically designated sections.
Entertainment is centred on El Kafr island, served by a free shuttle from the hotels. Restaurants, bars, shopping centres, a golf club, tennis courts, karting, a cinema, an aquarium and a kitesurfing base. The resort has its own small airport, a radio station and a microbrewery.

Hurghada: five districts of one city
Hurghada itself is divided into five districts with fundamentally different characters. From north to south: El Ahia → El Dahar (Old Town) → Sakalla (New Town) → El Mamsha → Village Road.
El Ahia
«Good beaches – but the windiest district on the whole coast in winter»
El Ahia is a 15 km resort-and-residential strip along the main road between El Gouna and Hurghada's Old Town. It's a standalone district, not a continuation of the city – Sakalla is a fair distance away.
The beaches in El Ahia are mostly sandy with a flat, gently sloping seabed – among the best-quality shorelines of any Hurghada district. There is virtually no entertainment infrastructure outside the hotels.
The main downside is wind. El Ahia is the most wind-exposed district on the entire coast: in winter it's noticeably windier here than in Sakalla or Makadi Bay. In summer this is a non-issue, but winter bookings here deserve careful thought.

El Dahar (Old Town)
«The real Egypt: noisy, colourful, cheap»
El Dahar is the heart of Hurghada. Around 70% of the city's local population lives here. Narrow streets, souvenir stalls, shisha cafés, restaurants and coffee shops – El Dahar is easy to get lost in and lose half a day. This is where the main municipal buildings are, along with the resort's largest mosque, El-Mina.
The beaches in El Dahar are small and compact. The surface is usually mixed – sand with shells, sometimes a stony entry into the water. Hotels here are old, and prices are the lowest in the city and its surroundings. The hotels are well sheltered from the wind, but not from the noise of busy streets.

Sakalla (New Town)
«Hurghada's tourist centre: restaurants, shops and the marina»
Sakalla is what most tourists mean when they say «the centre of Hurghada». It's where a taxi driver will take you if you say «take me to town». Sheraton Street is the main tourist artery. There's no shortage of restaurants, entertainment venues and shops – all oriented towards holidaymakers rather than locals.
The hotel beach areas in Sakalla are small but well sheltered from the wind. Hotels here are a step up in quality and price from El Dahar. The district's main draw is Hurghada Marina – a great spot for an evening stroll.

El Mamsha is probably the most well-rounded district in Hurghada. High-quality hotels – some of them brand new – line both sides of a 5 km pedestrian promenade. The restaurants and entertainment of Sakalla are right around the corner.
Another strong point is the minimal airport transfer: just 10–15 minutes. For those arriving with young children or landing late at night, that's a real advantage.

Village Road
«20 km of all-inclusive resorts: everything inside, nothing outside»
Village Road is a 20 km stretch of road from the airport to Sahl Hasheesh, densely lined with large resort hotels with extensive grounds. The concept here is singular: everything you need is inside. There's no reason – and no real option – to go beyond the gates, as there is no infrastructure outside the hotels.
Exceptions include the Grand Aquarium (well worth a visit with children) and Senzo Mall shopping centre closer to Sahl Hasheesh, at the 13 km mark.
One important caveat: the stretch between Jaz Aquamarine Resort 5* and Coral Beach Resort Hurghada 4* is noticeably affected by tidal movements – be prepared for periodic very shallow water. Wind in winter is considerably lighter here than in El Ahia.

Sahl Hasheesh
«An upscale resort with a 12 km promenade and private reefs»
Sahl Hasheesh is a young, actively developing resort district 19 km south of the airport. It was conceived as a premium alternative to busier Hurghada: hotel buildings interspersed with gardens, golf courses and restaurants. Some of the vision has been realised; more is still in progress.
A 12 km palm-lined promenade runs the length of the shoreline – bikes are available to hire (5 $ per hour) or electric carts (20 $ per hour). The Fountain Square at the centre offers a sweeping panoramic view of the sea.
Every hotel has a long stretch of sandy beach – there's room for all guests even at full capacity. The sea is shallow with a comfortable entry into the water. Hotels with a mixed sand-and-rock shore usually have their own jetty and – importantly for divers – their own coral reef.
Outside the hotels there is virtually no infrastructure. The nearest shops and restaurants are at Senzo Mall on Village Road.

Makadi Bay
«Desert, mountains and green hotel oases – with nothing else around»
Makadi Bay sits between Sahl Hasheesh and Soma Bay, 36 km from Hurghada Airport. The district's defining feature is spacious hotels with vast grounds and a full range of on-site entertainment. The flagship is Madinat Makadi: an enclosed complex of 11 hotels with a wide sandy beach, golf courses, shops and its own water park.
Beyond the hotels – nothing. Literally: just desert and mountains, which make for a cinematically striking contrast with the green oases of the hotel grounds. That's not a drawback if seclusion is what you're after. But if you want to occasionally venture into town, Makadi Bay isn't your district.
The area is considered relatively sheltered from wind. However, the beaches of some hotels are heavily affected by tidal movements: at low tide, the sea can recede a long way from shore. Jetties and heated pools on the hotel grounds partially compensate for this.

Soma Bay

Soma Bay offers the same concept of secluded, resort-centred holidays as Makadi Bay, but at a higher level. Hotel brands here include Mövenpick and Kempinski. One of Egypt's best golf clubs and the third-largest spa centre in the entire Middle East – offering thalassotherapy and mud therapy programmes.
Sea entry is predominantly sandy. The northern and eastern parts of the resort have coral reefs. Soma Bay is considered one of the best places on the Egyptian coast for learning to surf and kitesurf: the right wind conditions, unobstructed water access and long, wide shallow areas close to shore.

Safaga

Safaga is a small port town 60 km from Hurghada. In spirit it's closest to Soma Bay: wide beaches, shallow sea, rich underwater world. But hotel standards are noticeably lower and prices more accessible. Nightlife is equally absent.
Safaga's most distinctive feature is its therapeutic black sand. Its reputed benefits for psoriasis and rheumatism draw travellers specifically seeking health-focused holidays. The Menaville Safaga hotel runs a medical centre offering treatments based on the local «black gold».
For surfers and kitesurfers, Safaga is something of a pilgrimage site: the wind conditions are among the best on the entire Red Sea. The 16th-century Ottoman fort, in good condition, is worth a look for history enthusiasts.

Booking checklist:
- Check the sea entry type at your specific hotel: sand, rocks or a jetty – a critical difference for families with children.

A few pointers for those still undecided:
If it's your first visit and you want a balanced option, go for El Mamsha or Village Road: a good hotel, a decent beach and a short transfer. If life outside the hotel matters, Sakalla is the best tourist hub in the city. For peace and quiet at a high service level, Sahl Hasheesh or Soma Bay. Divers and kiters will be well served by El Gouna, Soma Bay and Safaga. For budget options, head to El Dahar or Safaga.
And the key piece of advice: in winter, always check the wind conditions for the specific district – the difference between El Ahia and Makadi Bay in January is very real.
