Sandy Beaches in Turkey – Which Resorts Are Worth It?

A pebble beach can be beautiful – but most holidaymakers still want sand. In Turkey, it's not a given: some resorts have natural golden shores stretching for kilometres, while others offer nothing more than a thin layer of trucked-in sand over gravel. Knowing the difference in advance means no disappointment on arrival.

Turkey is bordered by four seas: the Mediterranean to the south, the Black Sea to the north, the Aegean to the west and the Sea of Marmara to the north-west. The Black Sea and Marmara coastlines are poorly developed for tourism with no direct flights from Poland. We focus on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts – that's where the charters fly from Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław and Gdańsk.

Alanya

«Sandy beaches exist here – you just need to know where to look»

Alanya's coastline is mostly pebble and rocky, but there are several genuinely good sandy beaches. The best is Cleopatra Beach: legend has it that Mark Antony gave this spot to the Egyptian queen for its crystal-clear water and soft, fine sand. Today it's a free public beach about 2 km long, surrounded by mountains on three sides. The most comfortable entry point is on the left side – other sections can have patches of small gravel or concrete slabs. The beach flows naturally into the adjacent Damlataş Beach. For those after a more upmarket experience, Obamoy Beach offers developed facilities and bright yellow sand closer to the city centre, though it's less convenient for families with young children.

20 km from Alanya, İncekum is one of the most scenic beaches in the region, where golden sand gives way to pine forest. Nearby Avsallar offers warm turquoise water and a wide range of hotels and restaurants.

Belek

«The best choice if you want sand with no compromises»

Belek is the only resort on the Mediterranean coast where the entire shoreline – around 20 km – is natural sandy beach. No imported grit, no pebbles at the water's edge. The beaches earn a Blue Flag for cleanliness and environmental standards every year. The resort is considered one of the finest on the Turkish Riviera: hotels are mostly 5-star, fully equipped, with gently sloping entries into the sea. On the downside, prices are above average and there's virtually no city life beyond the hotel grounds.

Belek is also Turkey's golf capital.

If you want to combine a beach holiday with golf, this is the only resort in the country with internationally rated courses.

Kemer

«Stunning scenery, but let's be honest about the sand»

Kemer is surrounded by mountains and pine forests – genuinely beautiful landscapes. But the sandy beach situation is complicated: all the sand here is imported, and you'll hit pebbles as soon as you walk into the water. That's just the local geology. If a proper sandy beach is non-negotiable for you, Kemer isn't the right choice.

The best beach conditions are at large five-star hotels such as Majesty Mirage Park Resort, Rixos Beldibi and Magic Life Kirish, which maintain their own beach zones with imported sand. Kemer's real selling point is its extraordinarily clear water: because there's no natural sand on the seabed, visibility is exceptional.

Side

«Varied beaches and an ancient city in one place»

Side is a small ancient town that has preserved its Roman baths, temples, amphitheatre and millennia-old ruins. At the same time, modern Side is one of the most varied resorts when it comes to beach types: every couple of kilometres the character of the shoreline changes. Coarse sand gives way to smooth pebbles, wooden jetties to rocky stretches, green vegetation to open sand. In the town itself there are two sandy beaches, separated by a headland with the Temple of Apollo – both hold a Blue Flag.

The western beach is more lively with developed facilities. The eastern one is quiet and secluded: no bars or shops, the area split between beach clubs. 3 km from Side, the village of Kumköy has a wide sandy strip with a gently sloping entry – but be aware it's one of the area's main nightlife spots.

Antalya

«Pebbles in the city; 12 km of sand just outside»

Most beaches in central Antalya are pebbly, including the well-known Konyaaltı. But in the suburban districts of Lara and Kundu, it's a completely different story.

Lara – a 12 km sandy strip, partly municipal, partly belonging to hotels and restaurants. At one end it's bordered by the photogenic Düden Waterfalls. An annual sand sculpture festival turns the beach into a free open-air museum. Lara Kent Park nearby has a picnic zone with barbecue facilities.

Kundu (New Lara) – a resort zone between Antalya and Belek, home to the most exclusive hotels on the coast: exclusively 5-star, with private water parks, dive clubs, entertainment and spa facilities. Aimed squarely at high-end travellers.

Nature lovers should make the trip to Topçam beach in the Olympos National Park, around 30 minutes by bus from the centre. The surface is mixed sand and pebble, but it's clean and suitable for families with children.

Aegean Coast

The main airports for this section are Dalaman (DLM) and İzmir (ADB). Direct seasonal flights from Poland serve both airports.

Kuşadası

«The Aegean's best infrastructure at accessible prices»

Kuşadası is one of Turkey's most convenient resorts: a good transport network between beaches, a wide choice of hotels and entertainment, reasonable prices. Golden sand covers most of the resort's shoreline, except for the port area. The most popular beach is Ladies Beach: white sand, palm trees, gently sloping entry, equipped terraces, changing rooms and cafés. In peak season it gets very crowded.

Kuştur and Tusan beaches, a few kilometres from the centre, are well suited to families with children – calm and scenic. Yılancıburnu and the Pigeon Island area appeal more to divers and those seeking seclusion.

Didim

«Golden sand, peace and quiet, and the Temple of Apollo»

Didim is the resort for those who want to genuinely unwind away from urban noise. The public beach Altınkum («Golden Sand»), 6 km from the centre, has natural golden sand with no stones, a safe and gently sloping entry into the sea, and a Blue Flag. Nightclubs are almost non-existent – water sports and excursions take their place. Good restaurants and a wide range of private apartments.

The unmissable sight is the Temple of Apollo, dating to the 8th century BC – one of the best-preserved in Turkey.

Bodrum

«Turquoise bays, yachts, and sandy beaches only in hidden coves»

Bodrum suits those who value atmosphere and variety: diving, sailing, shopping, restaurants, excursions. Most beaches in town are pebbly – sandy ones sit in small coves a few kilometres from the centre. Cruise ships dock here in season, and tourist numbers spike sharply. Worth bearing in mind if you're after peace and quiet.

The best sandy beaches are Gümbet and Bitez: around 1.5 km each, quiet bays with developed facilities, popular with well-heeled international visitors. The village of Akyarlar, 20 km from Bodrum, is a free crescent-shaped beach with a comfortable, safe entry into the water. Perfect for a family holiday.

Marmaris

«Scenic bays – but you'll need to leave town to find real sand»

The beach situation in Marmaris is similar to Kemer: most «sandy» beaches are in fact pebbly shores that hotels and the municipality have topped with imported sand. Natural sand in the town itself is scarce. The best options are in the surroundings: the village of Turunç, 20 km to the west, sits in the most scenic bay in the region, framed by pine forest. The beaches of Kumlubükü and Kumlu, about 25 km from Marmaris, offer similar conditions: charming coves, a relaxed atmosphere and fewer visitors.

İzmir / Çeşme

«30 kilometres of free public beaches»

İzmir is a large modern city that blends Eastern atmosphere with European standards of service. The beaches here are mostly sandy. The city attracts shoppers, food lovers and those keen on sightseeing.

Satellite resort Çeşme, 80 km from İzmir, is one of the most appealing options on the Aegean coast: 30 km of coastline, virtually all public and free. Fine sand, warm water, a varied underwater world – it draws everyone from groups of young travellers to families with children and diving or sailing enthusiasts.

Fethiye and surroundings

«White sand, a nature reserve, and several beaches for every taste»

Fethiye itself has no beaches. But 15 km down the road begins the village of Ölüdeniz – one of Turkey's most iconic natural landmarks. Fine white sand, palm trees, a turquoise lagoon – this is the landscape that ends up on every Turkish travel poster. Ölüdeniz is part of a nature reserve, so entry to the Blue Lagoon beach is paid. Weekends get very busy. A good alternative is the free Belcekız beach in the same village: the views and conditions are almost as good.

An hour's drive away is Patara: a 15 km beach of fine white sand inside a National Nature Reserve. No hotels on the front, no vendors. Buses run infrequently. It's one of the best options for families looking for tranquillity and untouched nature.

Kaputaş – a tiny wild beach (about 200 metres long) between Kaş and Kalkan, an hour's drive from Fethiye. No hotels, no tourist facilities, free entry. Minibuses run regularly. This is that iconic «postcard image» of Turkey.

Those after an active day out should head to the Butterfly Valley: 5 km by boat from Ölüdeniz – a wild sandy beach enclosed by mountains and tropical vegetation, with no road access.

Dalyan

«Turtles, canals and the cleanest beach in the region»

Dalyan is a genuinely unique resort, unlike anything else on this list. Rivers and canals form a dense network, the town is lush with greenery, and locals get around by boat. Dalyan is sometimes called the «Turkish Venice». All the tourist infrastructure you need is here: hotels, restaurants, cafés, excursions.

The centrepiece is İztuzu Beach, with snow-white sand. It's best known as a nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta): the animals are highly sensitive to pollution, which is why the beach is kept to an exceptional standard of cleanliness. During nesting season (May–October), part of the shore is fenced off to protect the eggs – this doesn't affect swimming but adds a remarkable dimension to the experience. Beyond the beach: diving, blue crab fishing trips and excursions into the mountains.

And if you're looking for unspoilt nature and genuine seclusion, Patara, Kaputaş and Dalyan offer something you simply won't find at a standard package resort.
