Bulgaria is the only destination where in July 2026 you can buy a 7-night All Inclusive 4* holiday for two for under 3,000 PLN from Warsaw. That's a fact, not a marketing slogan — and it's precisely why Bulgaria remains the most underrated beach destination for tourists from Poland. But "going to Bulgaria" isn't a choice. The real choice starts inside the country: Sunny Beach and Golden Sands differ from each other roughly the way Łeba and Sopot differ — both are holidays in Poland, but the mood, the crowd and the atmosphere are completely different.
Sunny Beach — 8 km of beach, 112 hotels, waterparks and nightclubs that run until eight in the morning. It's a machine for producing beach holidays: efficient, predictable and the cheapest on the entire Mediterranean and Black Sea. Golden Sands — 3.5 km of beach, a pine forest right by the sea, Varna 12 kilometres away and a resort with a history going back to 1956 — one of the oldest on the Bulgarian coast. The architecture here remembers a different era. Some call this charm, others call it a reason to look carefully at hotel photos before booking. Both are right.

Bulgaria resolved the main logistical issue that held back tourists from Poland travelling on Ukrainian and Belarusian documents: from 31 March 2024 the country fully joined the Schengen Area by air and sea. This means that to cross the border at a Bulgarian airport, documents valid for the entire Schengen Area are sufficient — no separate Bulgarian visas, no border queues with passport control. For Ukrainian citizens with a biometric passport this means visa-free entry under the 90/180 rule. For Belarusians holding a Polish residence permit (karta pobytu) — free entry as to any other Schengen country.
A flight from Warsaw to Bulgarian resorts takes about 2 hours. This is the shortest flight to the sea among all popular destinations: shorter than to Crete, shorter than to Rhodes, shorter than to Tunisia. And Bulgaria hasn't lost its main advantage — price. Direct charter flights to Bulgaria in summer 2026 depart not only from Warsaw. From Kraków (John Paul II Airport), Katowice (Katowice Airport), Wrocław (Copernicus Airport) and Poznań there are also direct charters to Burgas and Varna — this fundamentally changes the logistics for tourists from southern and western Poland who don't need to travel to Warsaw for their flight.
Airports — an important detail: Sunny Beach is served by Burgas Airport (35 km from the resort, transfer ~40 minutes). Golden Sands is served by Varna Airport (12 km, transfer ~15 minutes). These are different cities and different flight destinations — check when buying your package.
Sunny Beach
"Bulgaria's largest resort — and that's both its main advantage and its main drawback"
Sunny Beach was built as a resort from scratch in 1958 and has grown non-stop ever since. Today it's 8 kilometres of continuous sandy beach, around 112 hotels, dozens of waterparks, attractions and nightclubs. It's Bulgaria's largest seaside resort and one of the largest in Eastern Europe — and it knows exactly what it's doing. The All Inclusive system here has been refined to a smooth operation: most large hotels offer a full package with food, drinks and entertainment, and leaving the grounds is essentially unnecessary — except to go to the beach. Near the resort are two sites worth a half-day trip: medieval Nessebar 4 km away, one of Europe's oldest cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site with churches from the 5th to 14th centuries, and the Monastery of St Anastasia on an island right in Burgas Bay. Both are easily reached by taxi or bus.
A word on the beach: 8 km is a lot, and where your hotel sits within the resort matters. The northern part of Sunny Beach is quieter and more family-oriented. The southern part is closer to the main bar and club zone. The central section is the most densely built and the cheapest. When booking, look not just at the hotel's star rating but at which specific sector of the resort it's in.

Sunny Beach is the optimal choice for those who need maximum infrastructure at minimum cost. Young groups will find one of Eastern Europe's best club scenes here — Mamaia in Romania competes, but Sunny Beach is cheaper. Families with children will appreciate the choice of waterparks (Action Aquapark, Aquapark Slanchev Bryag) and the vast shallow beach with a gradual slope into the water. First-time visitors to Bulgaria who want the simplest possible logistics — everything is included, everything is close by, no need to go anywhere. Don't go if you're looking for quiet, authentic Bulgarian atmosphere or city life outside the resort: Sunny Beach is a self-contained tourist world, and the nearest real Bulgarian city (Burgas) is 35 km away.
What to do
- Go to Nessebar early in the morning — 4 km by taxi (150–200 Bulgarian leva = ~30–40 PLN) or bus no. 1 from the resort's central bus stop; the old town sits on a peninsula 400 metres wide — everything on foot, and before 9 am there's almost no one there, while by 11 am all the organised groups have arrived
- Take a day trip to the Monastery of St Anastasia — a small island right in Burgas Bay, an active monastery since the 14th century, ferry from Burgas Pier (20 minutes); most Sunny Beach tourists never make it there
- Hire a bicycle and ride the full length of the beach from north to south — 8 km there and back along the shoreline, best early in the morning when the beach is still empty; rental shops on every corner, ~15–20 PLN per hour
- Visit the market in Burgas on a Saturday morning — 35 minutes by bus, the covered "Zhenski Pazar" market with Bulgarian cheese (kashkaval and bryndza), local honey and homemade pickles at prices 3–4 times lower than at the resort
- Watch the sunset from Cape Emine — 25 km from the resort, the most easterly point of the Balkan Range meets the sea directly; winding road, taxi ~80–100 PLN, views — no tourists, no souvenir stalls
Golden Sands
"Quieter, greener and twelve kilometres from the real Bulgaria"
Golden Sands is Bulgaria's oldest international resort: the first foreign tourists arrived here in 1956 and part of the architecture still reflects that. This isn't a flaw — it's a feature that some consider charm and others consider a reason to check hotel photos carefully before booking. The resort's main natural advantage, which Sunny Beach doesn't have: the Primorski Park — a pine forest covering more than 700 hectares adjoins the beach directly. In the morning you can walk from under the pines straight to the sea. The beach — 3.5 km of fine golden sand (hence the name), no sudden drop-off, moderate waves. Varna 12 km away is a fully functioning city of 350,000 people, with the best restaurants on the northern Black Sea coast, an Archaeological Museum (one of Europe's finest collections of Thracian gold), nightlife venues in the centre and a city beach where there are no resort-level prices for sunloungers.
An important practical detail: Varna Airport is 12 km from Golden Sands — one of the shortest transfers among Black Sea resorts. You land, 15 minutes in a car and you're there. For tourists flying from Warsaw or Kraków directly to Varna, this is a significant advantage compared to the 40-minute transfer from Burgas to Sunny Beach.

Golden Sands is the choice for those who care about the holiday environment, not just the presence of sea and All Inclusive. Couples aged 30–50 who enjoy going into town, trying local food and not hearing club music at three in the morning. Families with children for whom a pine park and a calm sea matter more than a loud entertainment complex. Tourists visiting Bulgaria for the second time who want to see something beyond the resort bubble — Varna is ideal for that. Don't go if the main priority is maximum nightlife and the lowest tour price: both are more abundant at Sunny Beach. It's also worth looking carefully at specific hotel photos — some of Golden Sands' older stock hasn't been renovated in decades, and "4 stars" can mean something quite different there from a modern hotel.
What to do
- Walk through Primorski Park from the resort to Varna — 12 km along the shore through pine forest, the path is well-maintained and safe; go in the morning, for the return trip take a taxi or bus no. 9 straight back to the resort beach
- Spend half a day at Varna Archaeological Museum — it houses the Varna Gold Treasure (4,560–4,450 BC), the oldest worked gold in the world; entry ~15 PLN, and most Golden Sands tourists have no idea the museum exists
- Have dinner at a fish restaurant on Varna's seafront promenade, not at the resort — the "Vodenitsata" restaurant or any place on Primorska Street: a portion of fresh Black Sea fish (red mullet, bluefish, turbot) for 20–30 PLN against 60–80 PLN in resort restaurants
- Take a day trip to Kavarna and Cape Kaliakra — 60 km north of Varna, sheer cliffs up to 70 metres above the sea, dolphins in open water (bottlenose dolphins migrate through here regularly in summer) and the Domaine Boyar winery right by the road with tastings for 25–30 PLN

Common mistakes:
- Booking a hotel at Sunny Beach without checking its position within the resort. The resort stretches 8 km, and a "beachfront hotel" in the north and a "beachfront hotel" in the south are very different experiences. The northern part is quieter and more family-oriented. The southern part is closer to the main entertainment zone. The centre is the most densely developed and the cheapest. Check the map for exactly where the hotel is before you book.
- Going to Sunny Beach for quiet and "authentic Bulgaria". Sunny Beach is a self-contained tourist world 8 km long. There's almost nothing Bulgarian about it: menus in English, prices in euros, staff who speak five languages. If authenticity matters — Golden Sands and Varna 12 km away deliver it far better.
- Going in June expecting to swim properly. Sea temperature in the first half of June — +19–21°C. For most people this is colder than expected. The swimming season is in full swing from mid-July. June is good for walks, excursions and the non-resort parts of the trip.
- Not checking which airport the charter flies to. Burgas and Varna are different cities 130 km apart. Buying a Golden Sands package with a flight to Burgas is a real situation that turns "15-minute transfer" into "2 hours on a bus".
- Booking a hotel from Golden Sands' older stock without looking at photos. Some of the resort's hotels were built in the 1960s–70s and haven't been renovated since. A "4-star" rating in that case means four Bulgarian stars by the standards of that era. Checking real photos on Booking and TripAdvisor is essential.
- Not leaving the resort at all. Nessebar from Sunny Beach — 4 km and 150 Bulgarian leva by taxi. Varna from Golden Sands — 12 km and a bus for 2 leva. Both are worth half a day and both fundamentally change how the trip feels.
- Ignoring September when planning. In September the sea on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is +23–25°C, air temperature +22–26°C, twice as few tourists as in August and tour prices 20–30% lower. It's the best month for those not tied to school holidays.
Entry requirements for Bulgaria
Bulgaria joined the Schengen Area by air and sea from 31 March 2024. This means that when flying from Poland, passport control on entry to Bulgaria is no longer carried out — the uniform rules of the Schengen Area apply.
- Ukrainian citizens: visa-free entry to the Schengen Area (including Bulgaria) for up to 90 days within any 180-day period on the basis of a biometric passport. The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the intended departure date. Important: the 90/180 rule applies cumulatively across the entire Schengen Area — if you have already spent time in Poland, Germany or another Schengen country, those days count towards the shared limit.
- Belarusian citizens: entry to Bulgaria requires a valid Schengen visa (Bulgarian or any other multiple-entry Schengen visa) or a valid residence permit in Poland (karta pobytu). A Polish residence permit grants the right to short-term stays in the Schengen Area — including Bulgaria — without a separate Bulgarian visa.
- Polish citizens: free entry as EU citizens, with no restrictions on length of stay.
Important: although Bulgaria is now in Schengen by air and sea, the country's land border is still not part of Schengen. When entering through Romania or Greece by car or bus, different rules apply — check the current information on the official Bulgarian embassy website or through your tour operator.

Golden Sands or Sunny Beach — which to choose in summer 2026?
If you need maximum infrastructure, entertainment and the lowest possible price — Sunny Beach will deliver better than any other Black Sea resort. Eight kilometres of beach, a hundred hotels to choose from, waterparks, nightclubs and Nessebar four kilometres away — it's a package that's hard to beat for value. For a first trip to Bulgaria with family or a group, it's the obvious choice.
If you need an environment, not just infrastructure — Golden Sands. Pine forest from the trees to the sea, a compact resort without the feeling of being in a human anthill, Varna 15 minutes away with the best restaurants and the world's oldest worked gold in the archaeological museum. It's not cheaper — on average 10–15% more expensive for the same hotel standard. But those who chose Golden Sands once tend to go back.
Final tip on the season:
Both resorts are at their best in September: sea +23–25°C — warmer than most Greek islands in the same month — twice as few tourists as in August, tour prices 20–30% lower, and Bulgaria stops being "the cheap alternative to Greece" — it simply becomes itself: unhurried, flavourful and unjustifiably underrated.
